So you wanna be a newborn photographer?

It can’t be that hard right?

So you’re a wedding photographer. You open up your email to find a message from a fantastic couple you photographed last year who have some amazing news for you – they’re PREGNANT! And guess what? They love you and can only imagine trusting the photography of their first born child to the one and only photographer who captured their wedding day. Uh huh, you’re it baby. Get excited … whether you’re ready for it or not … you are now a newborn photographer!

Familiar story?

Or maybe you just had your own baby. Bought that fancy DSLR and now spend every waking moment taking photos of your gorgeous little cherub. This is her in purple. This is her wearing shoes for the first time. This is her wearing a slightly lighter shade of purple than yesterday. Oh heyyyy guess what? Now your friends want you to take photos of THEIR babies. And their sister’s friend’s cousin. And now your mum is telling everyone and next thing you know, BAM, you’re starting a Facebook page and you TOO are a newborn photographer.

You got this! It can’t be that hard. Ya just cuddle those babies for a bit. Pop them on a blanket. Grab a nice little nifty fifty Canon f1.8 lens and off you go!

(this is the perfect place for that emoji monkey with his hands over his eyes)

Do you know what? I tell this story because I lived it!

Flashback to 2010 when Jessica was born and along with her came my very first DSLR, the ever faithful Canon 60D with, yep you guessed it, that little workhorse Canon 50mm 1.8. Om-MAH-GAWD. Look at how you can blur the background people!!! I nearly died the day I first worked out how to change the aperture on that puppy. Behold exhibit A : Jessica plonked in a flower garden. LOVING IT. Capture 105678889 of the week. Terrible lighting but guys, I blurred that background ya know. Everyone on Facebook must see this immediately!

(clearly had not yet learnt the rule of thirds either)

If you’re like me and decided on a bit of a whim that you wanted to get into this newborn photography gig, you might also relate to those many many Pinterest FAIL memes that you see in your Facebook feed every now and then. They are for REAL I tell you. I’ve done them all (ahhh … the watermelon smash … there’s a story for another day).

(I have no idea who originally took these photos – happy to credit you if you wanna own up to taking them!)

The point of this story is that we all started somewhere. Or are about to start. When it comes to the newborn photography industry in Australia, it’s all still relatively new with very little regulation or formal education available. That being said, the message all experienced newborn photographers around the country are preaching is the same. Get yourself at least some kind of training! Thank goodness it’s 2018 and a whole new world for newborn togs entering the game. There are experienced professionals out there ready to teach you everything you need to know and you bet you gotta yourself some of it! 1:1 mentoring … small group workshops … big events … online … whatever the format, it’s 100% crucial that you learn how to safely and effectively pose and photograph those precious little babes before you take on too many clients!

I decided early on that I would invest in at least one workshop or mentoring session each year of my career. And it was FABULOUS. I’ve tried it all and have always taken away amazing knowledge no matter the format.

If you’re thinking about newborn photography as a career or you’re already in it (thanks for all of the FB shares mum … aint no stopping that #1 fan once she gets on the PR train) take a look below at some of these amazing teachers and book yourself into some training today! Your business and little clients will most definitely thank you for it.
