Amy Philp Photography, Toowoomba QLD

How did you get started as a photographer?

I enjoyed capturing life’s treasured moments long before I learnt manual! Once my son Benji was born, I wanted to really understand my camera so I could capture quality photos of my little boys milestones! My confidence kept growing, and my skills expanded…I continue to learn and grow and be inspired by the world around us!

What did life look like before photography?

I work in the ‘social work’ world in my other life. It is both soul shattering and rewarding.

Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …

Edit, edit, edit – 1 hour photoshoot! Cull, share a sneak peak, edit, edit, edit. Admin, edit, edit.

Do you have a special story to share?

I have met some incredible new friends through my photography. That part is pretty special. But the most incredible time for me, thus far, was when one of my birth images went ‘viral’ and won several awards. That was a pretty incredible time.

If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Emotional moments! Birth, Weddings… documentary photography is natural and unique and makes us ‘feel’.

What is the best thing about your job?

Exploring my creativity, my perspectives of the world around me. It’s a beautiful distraction from the suffering I witness in my social work role.

Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …

Most creatives, like me, have had to overcome the ‘fear’ of sharing their ‘art’.

While it is a ‘business’, it is also my creativity and my ‘art’ on display. Knowing that my clients like their photos is really important to me.

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?

I have often tried to ‘leave’ the ‘welfare’ world that I have worked in since graduating in 2005. But… I always end up back there. I love working with people, supporting them to grow and change to be the best they can be!

Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?

A new mirrorless kit! Canon!
