Tess Jasmine Photography, Karratha Family Photographer

How did you get started as a photographer?

I have always loved taking photos but when I moved from Perth, WA to the North West of Western Australia I feel in love with the landscape and picked up photography as a hobby to get out and explore. I started by selling landscapes at the local markets and it snow balled from there.

What did life look like before photography?

I am a primary school teacher by trade. I still work in a day in the classroom and also do the odd relief day so that I keep my foot in the door. I love working with children and fostering their growth and development.

Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …

For me, as a single mum with two young children and running my photography business full time, my days a very full. Only one of my children is at full time school, so I work my office hours around my younger child’s kindy days and book babysitters for when I have shoots. I love that I am able to work my business around my children but it does make for some long evenings editing at times.

If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Children. I love photographing Children. I love to capture their personalities and them in the moment. Childhood is a such a fleeting time and it goes back in a blink of an eye. To have photos to remember the phases our children go through is one of the most precious gifts ever.

What is the best thing about your job?

Oooh, meeting so many different people and hearing about their journeys and lives. I love it when I have clients who continuously return and I get to see their families grow and evolve.

Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …

We often live and breath our work. It is part of us.

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?

I’d be teaching.

Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?

Education and workshops. I would invest in everything and anything that interested me, to help me grow and develop my skills and my business.

If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?

Oooh I have no idea. I’ve never actually thought about photographing anyone famous hahaha.
