How did you get started as a photographer?
After the kids had all started school, I started to work. I’ve had a LOT of different jobs. Some I liked, some I did not. Most had me feeling personally unsatisfied at the end of the day. Then in January 2016, I injured my shoulder at work. Constant pain. The non invasive treatment options weren’t working. I had to have surgery after which I developed a frozen shoulder leaving me with more pain and little movement. With the doctors telling me nothing more could be done, except wait for it to resolve itself. Which could take two to four YEARS! I fell into a deep depression. Chronic pain does bad things to your brain. It was such an awful time.
Light at the end of the tunnel…
My partner (at the time) wanted to help. He remembered a conversation we’d had about how much I loved taking photos. And in March 2017 he bought me a second hand DSLR. Now I didn’t have the first clue how to use it. It didn’t even come with a manual. But I was hooked. I joined every photography related Facebook group I could find. I looked up YouTube tutorials. I found a copy of the manual, then downloaded and printed it. I was absorbed and while it didn’t take the pain or the depression away, it gave me something else to focus on. And it got me out of the house.
What did life look like before photography?
I was working as a food service assistant in a private hospital. Which is where I hurt my shoulder.
Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …
A typical day is editing, editing, editing then some emails and social media content and marketing. The actual taking photos part is quite small compared to everything else.
Do you have a special story to share?
All my clients are special :). But there is one little girl who is extra special. After the session with her family, she ran up to me and gave me the biggest hug and said “You’re my most favouritest photographer ever”. Now you can’t beat that. Makes me tear up with happy tears every time.
If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Kids! I love them. Especially that 3-6 age group.
What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing is knowing the photos I take today, won’t just be enjoyed by the families now. They’ll still be loved and treasured by their grandchildren and great grandchildren. The value of photos only increases with time.
Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …
Buying props is an actual obsession…lol
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
Hmmm…I like to think this is what I was always meant to do. But I did consider going to uni to study radiology? So probably a radiologist.
Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?
Oohhh that would be amazing! First, I would buy a farm! So I could have all the animals to include in photos with the kids and famililes. And have the different locations for all my sessions. Second, would be some new camera gear. We always want new lenses oh and props. I would buy all the props! And lastly would be mentoring and learning from the best of the best!
If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?
Neil Patrick Harris with his husband and kids! They would just be soooo much fun. Especially at Halloween. They have THE best costumes.
