Stacey McCarthy Photography, Mt Annan, NSW
How did you get started as a photographer?
I’ve always been obsessed with photos. When I got my first camera (a pentax espio) for my 19th birthday it never left my side. After my son was born in 2008 I wanted to capture every tiny detail as he grew, so my hubby bought me my first DSLR and I went off to TAFE to complete my Cert IV in photoimaging. I graduated in 2010 and I’ve been photographing babies and families ever since.
What did life look like before photography?
Before I became a photographer I spent 10 years in the fast food industry and 10 years in the retail industry. Customer service is my jam!
Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …
It all starts with a hot cup of tea!! Pack the kids lunches and get them off to school, then home to tackle my to do list. The thing I love about my job is that every day is different. One day might be emails, paperwork, accounting, planning and marketing. Shooting days are loads of fun and laughter with my families, then home to back up, cull and edit their amazing images!
Do you have a special story to share?
I was photographing an extended family a few weeks ago and as I started posing Mum and Dad and getting them to snuggle up, one of the adult kids yelled out “we should probably let you know that they’re divorced!” I laughed thinking it was a joke and then Dad says “yeah we are, but we’re fine with this.”
If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
As much as I love photographing my families and newborns, I’d love to be one of those sports photographers who sit on the side lines at the footy.
What is the best thing about your job?
Watching my families grow year after year. I love that clients choose to come back to me to photograph all the special milestones in their lives.
Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …
No matter how long we’ve been in the photography industry, we still get nervous before every session. Butterflies, excited and a little bit anxious, haha, but it means we are still passionate about capturing something amazing for every client!
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
I’d probably still be selling handbags! Haha!
Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?
A fully equipped commercial studio space and someone to take care of all my marketing for me!
If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?
Pink and her family…I think it would be a stupid crazy fun session!
