Q&A with Sharon Jones of Sharon Jones Photography, Croydon Melbourne VIC

We love sharing these personal profiles of our favourite Australian professional photographers! Find out all about the person behind the lens in our Q&A series.

How did you get started as a photographer?

I was always interested in photography since around 13 years of age. After having my family and them growing up and becoming independent, I looked into doing newborn photos and attendended my first workshop 4 years ago. I have since done many workshops and 1;1 mentoring to learn my craft.

What did life look like before photography?

I worked as a teachers aide at a Special School and ended up doing the school photos for the students.

Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …

On the day of photographing a newborn I get up early,(after not sleeping well as the set ups for my shoot are going through my mind and I am excited) set up my studio for the client. I have everything ready that I will use on the morning of the shoot. I warm the room, have my camera fully charged and the bathroom ready for my clients. My studio is already cleaned and ready to go. Once they leave I load the photos onto my computer and edit one or two for a sneak peak.

Any memorable moments?

I called a dad Justin instead of Jason the whole 3 hours of being in my studio. Then when the client went home she contacted me a said we didn’t want to tell you but his name is Jason. Oh My God so embarrassing.

If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

What is the best thing about your job?

I am creating Precious Memories that will last for generations to come.

Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …

I have and will continue to do courses and education to better myself and learn as much as I can to give you beautiful photos. Also I will be 60 this year and I feel like I could be a mother to the other students in my courses. But I feel included and I love learning

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?

Probably still working as an aide in a Special School.

Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?

I would buy the use of an expert in the set up of Websites and Computer Knowledge. Maybe also a couple more lenses and purchase the use of a larger studio.

If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?

Prince William and his Family. I would like to see if their family is like everyone else’ family with children who may not want to cooperate at times.
