Madelyn Holmes of Madelyn Holmes Photographics, Central QLD
How did you get started as a photographer?
I picked up an interest in photography in high school, starting with nature photography and then I eventually tried portrait photography with my best friend modelling for fun. I never imagined photographing weddings and families for work as it seemed stressful, but I gave it a go and absolutely love it!
What did life look like before photography?
All of my jobs life have been based around photography and design. My first workplace was a camera store salesperson and lab technician, then I studied Digital Media while working in a graphic design studio and all the while I’ve been building my own business.
Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …
First things first, coffee! Then I go into the office, plan some social media content, check emails and open my editing or plan my shoot for the day. I’ll always have ‘To Do’ lists on my computer/phone/desk to keep me on track.
If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Professionally, weddings and families! I love being involved in such a special time in peoples lives and being entrusted to capture their precious memories to look back on. Personally, I love capturing special moments from my travels – especially landscape and underwater photography.
What is the best thing about your job?
I love the people I’m given the opportunity to meet as part of my work and the moments I’m able to preserve for them. It is a privilege to be trusted with such an important role and I take great pride in making sure my clients have the best experience possible while I capture their most important milestones.
Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …
Time flies, exist in photos! Most of us have a camera at our fingertips but have forgotten just how special it is to hold a photograph in our hand. So often it’s too hard to get Mum in a photo, too hard to get all the kids in one place, it’s too hard to line up Dad’s work schedule… sounds familiar, right? But one day in the future when your children are grown up, they will look back on your family photographs and cherish it more than anything they could buy.
Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?
At this point, some extra lenses and a new editing PC would be great! I’m also working on plans for a client viewing room/studio in the future…
