JULIE HEDGES – THREE HEARTS PHOTOGRAPHY, LYNDHURST VIC
How did you get started as a photographer?
I have always wanted to be a photographer, ever since I was a teenager. I loved being able to capture and create a story through photography
What did life look like before photography?
I have always been a photographer, but I did take a break for a few years to work in Early Childhood Education. It never stopped me taking photos though. I ended up becoming their centre photographer.
Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …
After getting the kids ready for kinder and school, I set up my laptop and get to work editing, getting marketing material ready or contacting clients to prepare them for their Portrait Sessions. I often get my kids to model for me as I try out new ideas and create new content to post on social media, which they love….for now.
Any memorable moments?
I had a client who had never had family portraits taken before because she has a child with additional needs and never thought he would co-operate. I assured her that I had worked with many children with additional needs and similar to her child’s and I would follow her guidance to what he could and couldn’t do. We had a fantastic session and we ended up getting a full Portrait Session for them and even some Portraits of her child on his own. They were so happy and when they got home, the mum sent me a message to say that their child had asked her if he could buy a watermelon for me at the shops. I had definitely made a connection with him.
If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
What is the best thing about your job?
Capturing moments of my family, of other people’s families that we can keep and look back at forever. Being able to use my creativity in a way that I love.
Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …
There is just a short time to be able to capture your loved ones whether they be young or old. Time is precious and now is the time to capture them, because if we wait until tomorrow, we might miss something that we truly treasure.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
Probably back in Early Childhood Education.
Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?
A new camera, new studio lights, Business Coach, new laptop, cloud storage, a new video camera…. it was a blank cheque after all, hahahaha
If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?
I love Kelly Clarkson and I would love to photograph her and her family, just because I love her music so much. I just hope that I don’t go all star struck and freeze, lol.
