Edwina Haggart – Edwina Kate Photography, Brisbane QLD
How did you get started as a photographer?
I was gifted my first camera at age 12 and I fell in love with capturing memories of friends and family. Through highschool I upgraded from my trusty instamatic camera to a beautiful SLR camera and began my journey of studying photography. Fastworward to being an adult and my camera hadbeen packed away while I discovered who I was, then children came into my life and I dusted off my camera and began moving forward with study and creating a business for myself (made with love)
What did life look like before photography?
I have dabbled as a hairdresser, model, sales & marketing professional and lastly in administration. I bounced between professions as I felt I was missing something in my life, now with camera in hand I feel complete.
Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …
Morning coffee with emails and socials, working on marketing/editing and all the business things. When I have sessions booked I reseach location, create moodboards and liase with clients to ensure I capture them in their way.
Any memorable moments?
Having to reschedule their wedding date one of my beautiful couples decided on shooting a re-save the date series of images with a funny twist. Image 1 they wore gloves and face masks while holding a sign asking Please re-save our date. Image 2 he proposed again with toilet paper and a sign saying “she said yes – “AGAIN” and the final image was them on the ground with Coronas and limes, he was asleep on her lap and she was drinking. This couple ade my day, their positivity has been amazing.
If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I would love to photograph couples in amazing parts of the world. Love of travel mixed with a love of love.
What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing for me about being a professional photogrpaher is that I meet so many amazing people who become like family, I can always do more to challenge myself and create magic and I get to do this while being able to balance my family life.
Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …
Most photographers work in this industry because they love what they do. They love capturing life as it happens, creating art with their own unique style and they are generally happiest behind the camera.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?
Well thats an easy one. First I would set my marketing streams, upgrade my equipment then I would run a give back to the community project through the art of photography. Capture the elderly and frail, the poor and homeless, the struggling starters in life for free, everyone deserves to be able to keep memories.
If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?
I would honestly love to photograph Johnny Depp, he is creative, unique, quirky and morphs into whatever role he plays seemlessly.
