Dan Metcalf Media, Goulburn NSW

How did you get started as a photographer?

Photography is something I’ve always enjoyed and since my first real camera (Sony A6000) the interest has only grown and gotten more important to me – and not to mention more expensive!

What did life look like before photography?

Before photography I have never had a ‘career’, I am currently studying my Masters in Secondary Teaching, but before then just odd jobs to get my by until I knew what I wanted to do.

Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …

My days currently are looking like a lot of website building, gaining clients since recently moving to Goulburn, and finalising a bunch of images I’m hoping to use for my online print store also found on www.danmetcalfmedia.com.au

If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

For the rest of my life? I would want to say landscapes, but that rules out the most dynamic subjects of them all – people, particularly my wife, friends and family.

What is the best thing about your job?

At the moment, the best thing is being able to dedicate all of my time towards doing something I absolutely love. I’ve always struggled to settle on a career because I’ve always low-key been tempted by the possibility of being a professional photographer, and now that’s becoming a reality.

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?

As I’ve said, I really struggle with knowing what I would do with my life outside of photography, but I am studying to become a secondary teacher – so that is what I would eventually be doing.

Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?

A blank cheque on my business at the moment would be great to just be several years of various subscriptions – website hosting, photo/video editing software, stuff like that. Also beefing up the computer to handle 10 bit 4k videos without proxies, along with an upgraded flash setup! But I’m more than happy with what I have currently.

If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?

Literally anyone in NZ South Island – recently got back from a holiday there and it’s just a photographer’s dream!
