How did you get started as a photographer?
I received my first DSLR camera in High School as a graduation gift from my grandfather because I was in the Yearbook club as a photographer for three years.
Fast-forward to adulthood, and I became a professional sports photographer first. I flew around to different cities in the US to shoot dance competitions around the country. A few years later, I had realised that my passion was to work with other people in a more intimate fashion opposed to being stuck behind the lens in front of a stage, so I started to shoot weddings and lifestyle sessions shortly thereafter.
What did life look like before photography?
Before I was a photographer I was a full-time university student, a server, a bartender, a marketing coordinator, and brand designer. I encompass all of these titles that I am proud to say created who I am today.
Tell us about a day in the life of a professional photographer …
As a photographer, we do so much more then just shooting and editing photos.
We also plan for social media, create marketing strategies, send emails, update our website, update our bookkeeping, make timelines, go to meetings, design albums, order prints, etc. We do so much more than click a few buttons!
Do you have a special story to share?
My most memorable wedding will always be the wedding where I felt that the couple was most authentically themselves. They had their dogs in their wedding (and chose a venue around it being dog friendly so they could attend), alongside their children, and also planned a secret proposal for one of the bridesmaids in the wedding. The bride even had the best man dress up in a white dress to surprise the groom when they did a first-look. It was a day that I will never forget because it had so many special moments!
If you could photograph 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Couples! I love the connection between two human beings called love and being able to show that emotion through photography.
What is the best thing about your job?
My favourite thing about being a photographer is when the client loves seeing the outcome of the photos. I love to see when positive emotion radiates from the client, because I know that I have made their day!
Tell us something we don’t know about professional photography …
We do a whole lot more then click a button!
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
Be a world traveller. lol Is that allowed as answer?
My university degrees are in Graphic Design with a focus on web design, and marketing so probably something pertaining to those fields.
Here’s a blank cheque! What are you going to spend it on for your business?
A drone, the new Nikon Z 9, a therapy office puppy? (joking…..or am I?)
If you could photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?
Anthony Bourdain (if he were still alive). I’ve always admired his blunt, straight to the point, way with words, and passion for food and culture. He did not have the best life leading up to his fandom, and because of this, he has had some dark times through his life, yet he was open to talking about it and sharing with others which is not easy for most to do, and is quite admirable.
